What is the history of the PET plastic cup?

It all started in the 60s when PET was used for manufacturing photographic film, as well as the production of increasingly popular video cassettes, x-ray films, and material for packaging.

It wasn’t until the 1970s when PET went through a stage of a massive expansion due to the new technology of using PET plastic in bottle production. To this day, this is the most popular way of using PET.

Not long after the first PET bottles, food packaging producers started to think about other uses for PET material. This, and the need for replacing shared glasses that started causing public health concerns, resulted in the first PET cups. After decades, disposable plastic cups made of PET, are widely used in the public service, as well as, music festivals, outdoor sports events, etc.

The many years of popularity of PET in production is a result of its great physical properties. PET is a material with high hardness and stiffness, as well as, good chemical resistance. As a result, cups made of PET are resistant to alcohol, fats, and greases, and widely approved for contact with food.

Amhil started producing PET cups in 2011. In less than 10 years we have introduced a wide range of PET cups differing in sizes, shapes, and uses.

Benefits of our PET cups:

  • They are LIGHTWEIGHT, and therefore a cost-effective alternative to glass cups and tumblers
